SPIRITED AWAY
November 11, 2017 – December 23, 2017

They don’t spirit away anything, Markus and Reto Huber. On the contrary. Equipped with rose quartz, scholars rocks and Himalayan salt they conjure up a cosmos in the gallery space that is nourished by faith and superstition. Men and nature clash in a disturbing way and build the grounds for hopes and fears. A dash of irony is unavoidable and anticipated.

Already in the Stone Age, men were using seashells, pearls, rock crystals and amber as amulets against different diseases, misfortune or witchcraft. Erected stones were worshipped throughout the Mediterranean: obelisks in Egypt, menhirs in Israel, omphalos stones in Greece and the Turoe-Stone with the Irish Celts. Even the black stone in the Kaaba of Mecca can be traced back to the tradition of cult stones. All these cultures had one thing in common: they believed in the supernatural powers of these stones.

huber.huber went far to collect their scholar stones. Fireplaces were a suitable source for their stones which needed to show traces of fire or men. Bound to the Far Eastern tradition of Suiseki these stones are placed now on wooden pedestals and serve the meditative moments of reflection. A disquieting scene since they are not particularly beautiful nor expressiv. Actually a sign of defect in terms of Suiseki.

In ’84 elements’ huber.huber refer to the healing powers of Himalayan salt which is made of the same 84 elements as human blood. This series shows under a wonderful layer of salt crystals numerous human beings, bodies and hands all sensually woven into each other.
