Elisabeth Sonneck

FLIEGENFÄNGER
August 29, 2015 – October 18, 2015

Five to nine meter long rolls of paper are hanging in spirals from the ceiling, are lying or standing on the floor. The interlaced rolls only reveal a fraction of the painted surface. Elisabeth Sonneck was inspired by the space of the hay barn and for ‘Fliegenfänger’ she couldn’t possibly have chosen a better place: where else would she find so many flies.

Sonneck’ images are created in the studio but her installations nevertheless always reference the on-site conditions of light, colour and space. Her pictorial compositions melt the paper rolls with the surrounding space without questioning their autonomy as an image.

Colour is applied in stripes on paper of 1,10 meter width. Every paintbrush refers to the maximum working area of her physical nature. There is no up or down – the later positioning only determines the orientation within the space. Apparently conceptually simple at first her work reveals at a later stage how complex and diverse it is. Fine nuances and overlaps create a flow of colour that twists, winds and drifts through the room. The observer is provided with a seamless, associatively experienced space of colour and form – with no beginning or end. The hay barn without any display walls connects with Sonneck’ paper rolls to an abstract space with no ‘in front’ or ‘behind’.

Sonneck’ sensitive capability to transform the environmental temperature into colour and form can be found equally in her installations as well as in her paintings. Her works retain their strength both in a contemporary neutral gallery context such as in last year’s group show ‘Aus gutem Grund’ and in a dominant exhibition space such as the hay barn.

Elisabeth Sonneck lives and works in Berlin, D. She completed her studies at the FH für Kunst Ottersberg, D and she is a one-year scholarship holder of the Berlin Senate. Sonneck teaches Colour and Space/Conceptual Painting at the HBK Saar, D. She has had numerous national and international exhibitions, most recently at the Kunstmuseum Ahlen, D and at the Triennale Bad Ragartz in Bad Ragaz, CH.
