TERRA INCOGNITA
March 14, 2015 – May 2, 2015

‘Cartography is the science and technology to reflect celestial bodies in topographic and thematic maps. The simplest being a geographical map,’ as per common definition.

In ‘Terra Incognita’ Sandra Kühne presents different presentation modes of how to approach these models by means of cartography. Her freely suspended paper-cut lines can be explored from all sides but render impossible to identify the mapped locus. Hence the mapped spaces can not be classified by empirical observation but only on an sensory level of experience.

Sandra Kühne presents in her first cooperation with widmertheodoridis a specially conceived, spatial installation, accompanied with additional works on paper.

Terra incognita is a term used in cartography for regions that have not been mapped or documented. Often these regions were labelled with ‘Here be dragons’ or other fantastic beasts. What, or who, was there to be found was a matter of pure presumptions. ‘Entering new territory’ eventually originates from this understanding.

Sandra Kühne also entered a new territory when she decided to work with silhouette, or rather paper cut. Unlike geographical maps that are trying to depict a region in a realistic way, Sandra Kühne’s spatial constructs evade from any immediate comprehension. Delicate lines, which do not constitute contour lines, but resemble a three dimensional drawing allow only limited orientation.

The same applies for the piece ‘Verwerfung’ (graphite and linseed oil on paper). The metallic shimmering peace of paper is crumpled till its form resembles a topographic map. The landscape still remains fictional and yet it can visually be explored just like a relief.

‘Cartography is the science and technology to reflect celestial bodies in topographic and thematic maps. The simplest being a geographical map,’ as per common definition. Sandra Kühne is an ardent explorer on a mission. She maps her studio, exhibition spaces, Antarctica, her shoulder, her headache. Her works bear witness to capture visually the world, the reality in a model, just like topographical maps. Starting point of a map is therefore always a simplification, a generated abstraction.

Sandra Kühne has been last showing at the Dienstgebäude Zürich, Kunsthalle Wil, Kunstmuseum Baselland and at the Zeughaus Teufen. Her next show will take place at the Kunstraum Engländerbau, Vaduz (among others Othmar Eder). Sandra Kühne completed her education at the ZHdK with a MA of Art in Fine Arts.
