Bildstein|Glatz

72 SHOTS
June 2, 2006 – July 8, 2006

The young artist duo BILDSTEIN|GLATZ operates in a dynamic collaboration beyond country borders. Matthias Bildstein lives and works in Vienna, Austria, Philippe Glatz in Berne, Switzerland. Both have been working independantly in different fields but meet since 2002 regularly for joint projects.

The pieces of work displayed in this show are the result of last year’s performance „72 Shots“ that took place on June 16, 2005 in Dornbirn, Austria. BILDSTEIN|GLATZ have in a playful manner succeeded in creating an unexpectedly frisky work with references to conceptual art and interactive performance.

The name of the performance „72 Shots“ was chosen randomly and there was no further indication on the black invitation card but the promise „Matthias Bildstein and Philippe Glatz will take the visitors on a „in-sight-journey““. That in-sight was experienced on the course that followed through land and buildings but the performance itself remained out-of-touch.

72 visitors equipped with blackened diver goggles and led by a guide started out on a journey with tactile and acoustic impulses that gave them this in-sight experience but little conclusion. At the end of the course the visitors were released and the action was finished f or the present. No indication was given where the artists were or what they have been doing in the meantime. Such a double blind flight is doomed for collision, as the picture of visitor no. 72 shows. He arrived late on the course and surprised the artists already detaching the technical equipment. The picture he took is the only self-portrait in this series whereas the rest of the visitors were unconsciously put into the role of the photographer.

The performance lasted for about three hours and ended at sunset. The artists were hoping for 72 pictures and it’s absolutely accidental that there were indeed exactly 72 visitors participating in „72 Shots“.

From this performance WIDMER+THEODORIDIS contemporary is showing a Video, Multiple-Pictures, an Edition and a Catalague. And as expected BILDSTEIN|GLATZ will iniciate another interactive performance on the opening night of June 1.
