Simone Kappeler

FLEUR
March 17, 2018 – April 28, 2018

In her works the Thurgovian artist loves to push the limits of analogue photography already since 1970. The images are precisely composed and yet experimental, almost poetic. In "Fleur" Kappeler blends new cyanotypes in extraterrestrial blue colors and magical residual light images of gardens at night with well-known classic works from her oeuvre.

Working, well drawing with light–photography–is probably the most comprehensive medium to visually save and convey information. The application ranges from amateur photography, reportage to various uses in technology, business and science. However, one can separate documenting and informative photography from image creating photography–taking in account that every image generation is subjective and intentional and as such constructively produces real and pictorial realities from raw material. Consequently, every images documents a personal occupation of reality–this applies in particular for Simone Kappeler: "My vision of photography is not to create a one-to-one image of reality, but to deviate a little and so enable a new seeing. It’s all about retaining and wresting something from the stream of time."

Using cameras of extreme variable quality and different film materials, is typical for Simone Kappeler’s work. Her visual vocabulary stretches from black-and-white photography to scenic, sometimes abstract color photo. What she captures are moments of emotional beauty, which challenge the boundaries of reality–moments full of charm and magic. Her technically heterogenous oeuvre appears cohesive even timeless and emphasises her strive to capture "eternity" by the means of photography.

Her new series comprises of cyanotypes which she created last summer in the south of France. Photochemical blueprinting is one of the oldest photographic technology and provides highly intensive blue images. Cyanotype relates to camera-less photography and has lately attracted a lot of interest again. Simone Kappeler employs this technique for quite some time now and shows an exceptional manual know-how. You have to determine the appropriate relation between exposure time, sun position, light intensity and the amount of the light sensitive film in order to create a good picture.

Simone Kappeler lives and works in Frauenfeld. She first studied German philology and history of art at the University of Zurich before she graduated from the Zurich University of the Arts. Her works are presented in international shows and are part of significant public and private collections. Numerous publications of her work are available.
